Do You Have The ‘Right Stuff’ For International Education?

When I left small-town Minnesota in 1985 to start my first overseas job as a PE/Social Studies teacher in Barranquilla, Colombia, I had no idea that international education would become my career path. Clearly, after 27 years at 7 schools in different regions of the world, working in international school settings has been a richly rewarding personal and professional experience for my family (teacher spouse and daughter) and I. Our daughter attended schools on three continents and has friends from around the world.

What about you? Far more than education degrees and teaching/admin experience, these personality traits and understandings will determine if you have the 'right stuff' for a successful career in international education.

6 Things School Leaders Can Do About Gun Violence

There will be another school shooting in America with loss of life. Then another. Then another. Elected officials do nothing, so our national nightmare of killing children and teachers in schools is not going to end. How many times have we heard on media, "We never thought it would happen here!" The next atrocity can happen anywhere, anytime. Willing to bet that nearly every school has already done a review of its “active shooter” procedures. That is not enough.

How Would You Transform School?

Great question! Doesn't get asked enough by school community stakeholders. More often, the question is: How would you change school?

Let’s start with the change school question and hypothetically ask those most impacted- teachers and students.

A typical teacher response could be suggesting new furnishings, better curriculum materials, more tech (maybe less tech!) and "MORE TIME dammit!"

Student comments might be less elegant, but more revealing. “School is boring and stupid.” For them, change is easy. Make it more fun.
